Research project: Getting Our Stories Back

The "Getting Our Stories Back" project arose from the joint desire of representatives of indigenous communities from the Chugach region in Alaska and the Ethnological Museum in Berlin to continue their collaboration, as a further step in the cooperation that has been ongoing since 2015. In addition to reciprocal visits, joint provenance research and appearances at international conferences, the return of nine grave goods to the Chugach Alaska Corporation in 2018 should also be mentioned. 

These objects were among numerous cultural artifacts from Alaska that Johan Adrian Jacobsen had brought to Berlin at the end of the 19th century on behalf of the "Königliches Museum für Völkerkunde" (now the Ethnologisches Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz).
